Cost of Care: SSI, SSDI, Medicine & Respite

Age 3: DX Auditory Processing Disintegration/Sensory processing disorder (SPD; also known as sensory integration dysfunction) is a condition that exists when multisensory integration is not adequately processed in order to provide appropriate responses to the demands of the environment.


Age 5: DX Asperger Syndrome is a condition on the autism spectrum, with generally higher functioning. People with this condition may be socially awkward and have an all-absorbing interest in specific topics. Communication training and behavioral therapy can help people with the syndrome learn to socialize more successfully.


Age 7: RX Risperidone is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Risperidone is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression). Risperidone is also used in autistic children to treat symptoms of irritability.


Age 10: IEP HC “Emotional disturbance” is defined as follows: (i) The term means a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance: (A) An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors; (B) An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers; (C) Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances; (D) A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression; or (E) A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. (ii) The term includes schizophrenia. The terms does not apply to children who are socially maladjusted, unless it is determined that they have an emotional disturbance.


Age 14: DX: Anxiety Disorder, severe & Acute Depression

Age 14: RX Lexapro (Escitalopram) is used to treat depression as well as generalized anxiety disorder. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It may decrease nervousness, improve energy level and improve feelings of well-being. (It may also make your teenager gain 30 pounds in 3 months...)

Age 14: RX Trazodone is an antidepressant medicine. It affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with depression. Trazodone is used to treat major depressive disorder.


Age 15: IEP HC “Autism” means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences. The term does not apply if a child’s educational performance is adversely affected primarily because the child has an emotional disturbance, as defined in paragraph (b)(4) of this sections.


Age 16: RX Prozac is an antidepressant. It is mainly used to treat major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder. Also known by its generic name, fluoxetine, Prozac is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Around 1 in 10 people in the United States (U.S.) are thought to use SSRI drugs, and 1 in 4 women in their 40s and 50s.


Age 18: Medical cannabis


Age 19: RX Ativan, known as lorazepam in its generic form, is a benzodiazepine primarily used for short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety disorders in adolescents and adults. It may help relieve excessive worry, shortness of breath or heavy perspiration, feelings of edginess, and difficulty sleeping due to anxiety.
